A bareback pad is used when you want to ride without a saddle but still want to maintain more grip on the horse's back.
The bareback pad is essentially a saddle without stirrups. The pad has a girth and replaces the saddle. Riding with a bareback pad gives the rider a feeling of freedom. The bareback pad allows you to ride without a saddle while still maintaining more grip.
You place a bareback pad directly on the horse's bare back. It provides less support than a saddle but makes it less slippery than riding on the bare horse's back.
A bareback pad ensures direct contact with your horse. Your horse can move more freely under a bareback pad, and you can more easily feel whether your horse is tense or relaxed. This creates a close contact feeling.
Because you ride with a bareback pad instead of without, you often sit more comfortably and softly, especially if your horse has a prominent withers or spine.
Riding with a bareback pad is also more comfortable for the horse because the horse doesn't constantly feel your seat bones.

The most important thing is, of course, the safety of both rider and horse. Make sure you start in an enclosed space and always under the supervision of someone who can help you if needed. Always ensure that your horse is properly girthed.
Only wash the pad if necessary. If the pad is very dirty, you can hand wash it. Washing reduces the lifespan of the pad, so do not wash it too often. However, make sure to regularly remove hair and dirt from the pad after use.
Compared to a few years ago, there are many different shapes of bareback pads available, and this is still growing. Each brand gives its own features to the pad, sometimes with very unique properties. The biggest difference is in the materials used, so the pads vary in price depending on the brand.
Most models of bareback pads have the same shape as a saddle, and some are equipped with thigh rolls or knee rolls for more support.
The bareback pads from Christ Lammfelle and some wool-lined ones from FRA are equipped with so-called inserts. These foam and/or mesh-shaped thin "cushions" are inserted into the pads and provide more spine clearance for the horse while still offering a close contact feel.
