Can horses be naturally dewormed?
Natural deworming is not possible. Preventive chemical deworming is also not recommended, as it burdens your horse's liver with toxins. Worming treatments are no longer available over the counter and are only obtainable with a veterinarian's advice. This shift is crucial because improper and excessive use of worming treatments led to worms developing resistance, rendering them unaffected by the dewormers. It is imperative for horse owners to use dewormers judiciously and only when necessary, based on veterinary recommendations, such as when a fecal examination indicates a worm infestation. The right dosage and active ingredient must be administered to prevent the development of resistance.
Additionally, proper stable and pasture management can reduce the risk of worm infestations. Cleaning manure from pastures significantly reduces the worm burden, and the composting of manure for at least one year ensures the destruction of worm eggs due to the high temperatures in the composting process.
Some plants, like sainfoin (esparcette), contain substances that make the digestive environment unpleasant for worms. Esparcette, the main component of Wurminex, contains tannins that create an unfavorable environment for worms in the horse's digestive tract. Alongside effective stable and pasture management, nutrition can play a role in reducing the likelihood of worm infestations and supporting horses prone to frequent infestations.
What is Maridil Wurminex?
- Not a chemical dewormer
- Special mix of natural herbs
- Pressed into 4mm pellets
- Creates an unfavorable environment for worms
- Suitable for horses and alpacas
Benefits of Maridil Worminex:
In addition to creating an unfavorable environment for worms in the horse's digestive tract, the main ingredient in Wurminex, esparcette, also has a positive influence on the intestinal flora and the immune system. The pellets are pressed under high pressure without binders, grain-free, and molasses-free.
Wurminex application:
- Reduce the risk of worm infestations
- Extend the period between chemical deworming
- Intestinal rehabilitation: provide a prolonged recovery period for the intestines after a severe infestation, especially when it's challenging to change stable and pasture management, leading to likely reinfestations
- Indirect, long-term: improve pasture hygiene
Maridil Wurminex is ideal for:
- Conscious horse owners who want to minimize chemical deworming to avoid the introduction of toxic substances into the ecosystem through manure
- Horses with sensitive digestive systems that may not tolerate chemical deworming well
- Pregnant and lactating mares, as well as foals
Recommended usage:
- A Wurminex treatment should last at least 3 weeks
- Preferably feed 25-30g twice a day per 100kg body weight; if feeding once a day, use 50-60g per 100kg body weight, either directly or mixed with regular feed
- After the treatment, consider feeding esparcette pellets or chaff for an extended effect; esparcette can also be given as a standard base feed
- The treatment can be repeated 3-4 times a year
