This is a hand scale. With this hand scale, you can weigh hanging items. And you may be wondering, what does a hand scale do in an online shop for equestrian products?

    Function:

My hand scale hangs next to the hay with which I feed my horses. I fill the hay into a large shopping bag or hay net and quickly hang this filled bag/net on the scale. This way, I know how many kilograms of hay I feed my horses. Roughage is the main source of nutrition for horses. The entire digestive system is designed to digest roughage (and not kilograms of pellets). Therefore, it is important for me to ensure that my horses receive enough roughage.

    Quantity of roughage:

Most websites and studies suggest that horses need 1-2% of their body weight in daily roughage. However, I stick to at least 2%, as my experience shows that my horses do better on it. For example, a Haflinger weighing about 400 kg, I give at least 8 kg of roughage daily. Note that I am talking about at least x kg all the time. I also pay attention to the behavior of my horses and their physical condition. If necessary, I feed them more roughage, for example, when it is very cold outside. Don't know how much your horse weighs? Then use the "weight meter" or calculate it using a formula.

    Feeding times:

Once you have determined how much roughage your horse needs, it is not very practical to give this entire amount at once. A horse likes to eat for 16 hours a day, as its digestive system does not tolerate being "empty" well. Therefore, divide the quantity into portions, at least 3, but preferably 7 times a day a portion. Note that there is often a relatively long period between your last feeding and your first feeding in the morning. Therefore, make your night portion larger. To make a horse take longer with its portions, you can consider feeding the roughage with the help of a hay net.
