Low in starch and sugars
Vitalbix PsylliumMash is grain-free and molasses-free, hence low in sugar and starch (3% and 3%), with a low calorie content. This makes the mash/slobber suitable for horses needing a low-starch, low-sugar diet.
Picky eaters
Vitalbix PsylliumMash is very palatable and generally well-received even by the most selective eaters. This allows you to easily and quickly administer a sand purge that your horse will enjoy! As with any feed, your horse may need time to adjust to the taste. In this case, start with a smaller amount for the first few days and gradually increase to the recommended dosage.
How does sand colic occur?
Sand colic results from excessive sand intake. Sand intake itself isn't necessarily a problem as most horses can tolerate some sand in their intestines. However, if more sand is ingested than expelled, it can accumulate and lead to colic. Symptoms in your horse may only appear when it's already too late.
Tips to prevent sand colic
- Pay attention to the ground where your horse stands. The coarser/larger the sand particles, the higher the risk. Larger, heavier particles are more likely to settle in the large intestine. For high-risk situations, administer a preventive sand purge.
- Consider your feeding area. Avoid feeding on sandy ground. Use a hay net, for example, with a rubber mat underneath.
- Fiber also helps prevent sand buildup. The large intestine is a major digestive vessel where digestive enzymes break down fibers into usable particles. To prevent heavy items like sand and dirt from settling, ensure the "vessel" is consistently filled with fibers. Provide as much roughage as possible.
- Exercise! Increased movement promotes digestion.
- Water, ensure an adequate supply of clean water. Research shows horses and ponies that drink too little are more prone to colic.
- Preventive sand purge. Depending on your (horse's) risk factors, it's advisable to administer a purge once every 1, 2, or maximum 3 months. This helps prevent sand buildup.
How do you recognize if your horse has too much sand?
- Diarrhea / loose stools
- Weight loss
- Reduced appetite
- Acute, chronic, or recurring colic
- Laminitis
- Poor performance / lethargy
- Poor bending to the right (with sand in the cecum)
Self-test for sand colic
You can easily test if your horse is suffering from sand colic. Take a handful of manure in a transparent glove or bag. Add water and hang it up for a few hours. The sand present will settle to the bottom. About half a teaspoon of sand is not a problem, but if there's more, it's strongly recommended to administer a sand purge. However, note that your horse does not necessarily pass stool evenly. Therefore, repeat the test several times with different manure samples.
Recommended feeding method for Vitalbix PsylliumMash
Administer Vitalbix PsylliumMash (preventively) as a course to support sand removal from the intestines. Mix PsylliumMash with 2 to 3 parts water for a thick mash, and with 4 to 5 parts water for a very thin mash. You can vary this according to your horse's preference! Use cold or warm, but not boiling water. Let it stand for 10-15 minutes, stir, and feed immediately! It's not suitable to leave it standing for long after preparation because the seeds swell, and you want this to happen at the right time in the intestines. Do not mix with other Vitalbix products, supplements, or medication. Always consult your vet before administering medication. Ensure your horse has sufficient water and fiber available; this enhances the treatment. Administer the course for 5-7 days once a month.
Daily dosage
- As a preventive course: 100 grams of mash per 100 kg of body weight, once a day. For a 500 kg horse, feed 500 grams in one portion per day. With one bag, you can give this for 12 days (2 courses)!
- If sand is found in the feces/intestines: 200 grams of mash per 100 kg of body weight, once a day. For a 500 kg horse, feed 1000 grams in one portion per day. With one bag, you have enough for one course. Repeat the course as needed in consultation with your vet.
- If there's a lot of feces/sand in the intestines: 200 grams of mash per 100 kg of body weight, twice a day. For a 500 kg horse, feed 2 kg in total per day, divided into two portions. So, a 500 kg horse gets a total of 2 kg per day. Repeat the course as needed in consultation with your vet.
Note: PsylliumMash has the same weight as Nutrimash on the Vitalbix measuring cup. You can use the Nutrimash markings on the Vitalbix measuring cup, making it easy without needing an extra measuring cup.
