Why feed with hay net/slow feeder:
Feeding roughage (hay and pre-dried grass) using a hay net slows down the foraging duration (eating time). The horse cannot consume as large amounts of roughage at once, as is the case in nature. A horse typically grazes for about 16 hours a day, and its digestive system is adapted to this. A longer feeding time has a positive effect on the digestive system, reducing the risk of stomach ulcers, preventing boredom, and minimizing stable vices. Additionally, using a hay net reduces wastage of roughage.
Advantages of the fine-meshed slow feeder:
+ Encourages the horse to consume smaller portions
+ Reduces hay wastage
+ Small mesh size of 3x3 cm
+ Hanging loops
+ Large filling opening for easy filling
+ Strings for closing the net
+ Suitable for small ponies and Shetland ponies due to the small mesh size
Disadvantages of the 3x3cm slow feeder:
- Wire thickness is only 2.5mm, which may wear out faster compared to hay nets/slow feeders with thicker wires
Hanging the hay net:
The hay net should be hung so that it is 20cm above the ground, maintaining the natural foraging posture of the horse/pony. Do not hang the net above the horse's head, as this could allow dust to enter the horse's airways. Use is at your own risk. It is recommended not to have the horse wear a halter or horseshoes when using the hay net to minimize the risk of the horse getting caught in it, except for a safety pasture halter that comes off easily in emergencies, see an example here.
