Salt and trace elements are essential components of daily nutrition, contributing to good health and better performance. Salt is the most important mineral that horses, cattle, sheep, and goats need. The natural salt content of grass and hay is insufficient to fully meet the animals' needs. Animals have a natural ability to sense their salt requirements, and with Premiumblock salt licks, they can fulfill their individual needs themselves.
Why magnesium oxide in the salt lick instead of magnesium citrate or chelate:
When you feed magnesium to your horse, it is important that the magnesium dissolves well so that it is absorbable for the horse. If a deficiency needs to be replenished, and large amounts of magnesium need to be fed, you need a magnesium type that is well soluble in the stomach, such as citrate or chelate. However, in a salt lick, magnesium (oxide) enters the stomach in small amounts, a maintenance dose. The small amounts of magnesium oxide from a salt lick dissolve in the acidic environment of the stomach because it is such a small quantity, making the magnesium absorbable for the horse. Additionally, magnesium oxide copes better with the salty environment of the salt lick.
